Katrina Legislation Tracking is monitoring the Louisiana Special Session from February 6-17, 2006. This email begins our series tracking how the Special Session will affect the post-Katrina rebuilding of Louisiana. These next two weeks are a critical time to make sure the voices of Katrina survivors and advocates are heard.
This email provides an overview of legislation covered in the Special Session. Future emails will provide analysis of proposed legislation and suggestions on how to take action!
What is the Special Session?
Governor Blanco has called an Extraordinary Legislative Session from February 6-17th to address the post-Katrina rebuilding process. The Session is limited to those issues identified by the Governor, which include: upcoming local elections, eminent domain authority, levee consolidation, and a number of other issues of interest to advocates.

Katrina Legislation Tracking wants to hear from you and your organization! Are you tracking housing, eminent domain or other Katrina-related issues? Or, do you have an advocacy strategy that you want to share with a broader network?

What legislation will the Legislature discuss during the Special Session?
As of Sunday evening, the Louisiana State House had filed at least 52 bills, and the Louisiana State Senate had filed at least 7 bills. In later emails during the Special Session, Katrina Legislation Tracking will compile analysis on these bills.

We believe that public policies should correct the race, class and gender inequalities that contributed to Hurricane Katrina’s devastation.
